Ghani Honors Emirati Victims During Visit To Their Families

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, who is currently in the United Arab Emirates, on Sunday visited the families of those killed in last month’s explosion at a guesthouse in Kandahar.

Ghani honored the UAE victim’s families with the medal of Jamal Al Din Al Afghani, media reports stated.

“The UAE, under the wise leadership of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, had contributed to many humanitarian and charitable initiatives that alleviated the suffering of the people of Afghanistan, and supported its development and social planning,” Gulf News quoted Ghani as saying.

The sacrifices of the people of the UAE highlight their genuine virtues and their desire to help the vulnerable people of Islamic and other friendly countries, Ghani added.

The blast occurred inside the Kandahar governor's high-security guesthouse where the UAE diplomats, including Ambassador Juma Mohammed Abdullah Al Kaabi, had gathered for dinner.

No group claimed responsibility and the Taliban denied any involvement.

The Kandahar police chief Gen Abdul Raziq blamed the Haqqani Network while the Afghan National Security Adviser Hanif Atmar claimed that the attack was planned 'outside’ the country.

However, Head of General Security for the Emirate of Dubai Lt Gen Dahi Khalfan Tamim disputed the claims by the Afghan security officials and said Afghan officials are responsible.

A UAE delegation recently visited Afghanistan to get a briefing on the circumstances that led to the serious security lapse and the progress in the investigation.

Reports stated an Arab diplomatic source said the UAE officials have "conveyed their serious objections at the failure of the Kandahar security officials including Gen Raziq, to ensure security for the UAE ambassador and diplomats."

Raziq had walked out of the guest house just three minutes before the bomb exploded inside the guest house.

The media has reported that sources close to the Taliban say that Taliban representatives from the Qatar office were scheduled to travel to the UAE on Sunday to meet officials and clarify that they had no role in the attack.
