Ghani Visits Gardez Mosque Attack Victims

President Ashraf Ghani visited victims of the Gardez mosque attack on Saturday night who are being treated at Sardar Mohammad Daoud Khan hospital in Kabul, the presidential palace said in a statement.

According to the statement, doctors briefed Ghani on the condition of patients and on the treatment they were receiving.

Ghani chatted to the victims and assured them that government will soon start the process of repairing the damaged mosque.

The president also ordered the doctors to ensure the victims received the best care possible, the statement said.

The doctors also assured Ghani that they will put all their efforts into treating the wounded.

At least 34 people were killed on Friday when two suicide bombers detonated their explosives inside a mosque during Friday prayers.

In a statement after the incident, Ghani condemned the attack and said it was an anti-Islamic and criminal act.

The attack took place at about 1.20pm on Friday at the Sahib-ul-Zaman Mosque in Khwaja Hassan area in Gardez’s PD2. The suicide bombers first opened fire on mosque guards and worshippers before using hand grenades. They then detonated their suicide vests, police confirmed.

The Taliban has denied any involvement in the attack.
