Govt Divides Kabul into Four Security Zones

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Unity Government Abdullah Abdullah on Saturday said government has divided Kabul city into four security zones in order to better manage safety in the capital.

Abdullah made the remarks at a blood donor drive in Kabul on Saturday organized by Ahmad Massoud, son of national hero Ahmad Shah Massoud to mark Martyrs Week and the death anniversary of Massoud.

Abdullah said government is trying to maintain security in the country, especially Kabul, and that it has divided Kabul city into four security zones.

“The measures are being taken after discussions, sharing professional views and based on the experience that we have,” said Abdullah.

The decision was however met with contempt by many who said this would not make a difference.

Former chief of the National Directorate of Security Amrullah Saleh, however, told TOLOnews that dividing the capital into security zones will not result in better security.

On Friday evening President Ashraf Ghani said at a meeting with representatives from the Dasht-e-Barchi community that Kabul will be divided into four security zones and special attention will be given to Dasht-e-Barchi’s security.

“The measures in this area are not enough and I have directed that Kabul be divided into four security zones, including West Kabul, and that now the Security Coordination Center is active in western Kabul and will become a core security center in the future,” Ghani said.

Saleh said the only way to keep the country, especially the capital, secure is for the people to work with the security forces and for government to gain the people’s trust.

“People should be put at the center, as they always have said. Putting people at the center means that they ask the people who the enemy is and where the gaps are,” said Saleh.

Meanwhile sources told TOLOnews that following the recent bombings in the Afghan capital, government has dismissed the heads of security and intelligence departments for Kabul city.

According to sources, commander of Kabul police, commander of 111 army division in Kabul and also head of NDS for Kabul are among those dismissed.

“A new commander has been appointed for Kabul and will be introduced today. Such changes will happen in other parts as well,” Najib Danish, spokesman for the interior ministry said.

Kabul has witnessed a string of deadly bombings in recent months. Former military officers have also said that security in the capital has deteriorated drastically in the last few years.
