The next president who steps into the presidential palace and takes over the office will be someone who wins the support of Hizb-e-Islami in the next presidential election, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, head of Hizb-e-Islami said at a press conference in Kabul on Saturday.

According to Hekmatyar, any presidential candidate who has the votes of Hizb-e-Islami will become the next president of Afghanistan.

Hekmatyar also said in the next parliamentary election his party will participate in a major way, but emphasized that the party has not yet decided to support any specific nominees in the next presidential election.

“The next president of Afghanistan is someone who Hizb-e-Islami wants,” said Hekmatyar.

Regarding the peace process Hekmatyar urged the National Unity Government (NUG) to prepare good opportunities to encourage the armed anti-government groups to join the process.

Meanwhile Chief Executive’s Office and the Independent Election Commission in reaction to Hekmatyar’s remarks regarding his party’s role in electing the next president said that he was just exaggerating and was not realistic.

“Parties try to show the other parities up as weak and themselves strong. They highlight and speak of such issues to grab attention,” said Jawed Faisal, CEO Deputy Spokesman.

“The election belongs to all Afghan people not to a specific person,” IEC head secretariat, Imam Mohmmad Warimach said.

Hekmatyar said if government accepts the legitimate demands of the anti-government groups and provide them with good opportunities; a big number of them will join peace process.
