IEC Apologizes to Afghans for Delaying Election Results

The Chairperson of the Independent Election Commission, Hawa Alam Nuristani, said on Saturday that the Election Commission apologizes to the Afghan people for not managing to announce the preliminary results of the presidential polling on time.

The Afghan Election Commission was due to announce the preliminary results today.

Nuristani stated that one of the reasons for delaying the announcement of preliminary results is to further ensure the transparency of the process.

She also said that some observers from the election campaigns are acting outside of their agreed upon roles, which is complicating the process.

President Ashraf Ghani has welcomed the IEC’s move to delay the results to ensure more transparency.

“The Afghan people yearn to hear about the results of the presidential elections, but we respect the Independent Election Commission’s decision to postpone announcing the results to ensure fairness, transparency and accountability of the final vote,” Ghani tweeted.
