IEC To Finalize List Of Candidates For Its Secretariat

At least 76 candidates have applied for the Independent Election Commission’s (IEC) secretariat from which three of the applicants will be introduced to President Ashraf Ghani next week, the IEC spokesman Gula Jan Abdulbadee Sayyad said on Sunday.

“The candidates will be shortlisted by Wednesday and then they will be interviewed. After the interview, the top three candidates will be introduced to the president,” the spokesman added.

Meanwhile, a number of electoral watchdogs urged the IEC to select its candidates on merit-base.

“As the new commissioners do not have enough experience, thus the head of IEC secretariat and the deputies should be experienced in order to regain people’s trust in the electoral commissions,” said Jandad Spinghar, head of Afghanistan Civil Society Elections Network (ACSEN).

“Qualified, independent and trusted people should be appointed as head of the IEC secretariat and deputies of the office in order to better manage the [upcoming] elections,” said Mohammad Abduh, an MP.

According to the new election law, a big part of the IEC secretariat’s authorities have been given to its administrative and operational deputies who will draw up the majority of the election's operational plans.
