Iran To Send In Aid To Afghans Affected By Recent Avalanches

The Iranian government has expressed its sympathy with Afghanistan after the recent spate of avalanches and heavy snowstorms that gripped the country and have in turn pledge to provide humanitarian aid to affected areas.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi said on Monday his country will send in aid to help those in need.  

Two years ago, Iran also helped the Afghan government deliver aid to victims in Panjshir province, that had been hit by avalanches.

This comes after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Monday night expressed his condolences to families who lost relatives in the recent events and said his prayers were with them all.

He said the heavy snowfalls recorded around the country were unprecedented and unexpected.

Ghani stated that in the past 50 days, more than 160 people had lost their lives in snowstorms and avalanches as well heavy rain.

On Monday, disaster management officials confirmed at at least 119 people had been killed in just three days.
