Iran Warns Afghan Envoy Over 'Intolerable' Protests in Kabul

Abbas Mousavi, the spokesman for Iran's foreign minister, in a press conference on Monday said that the ministry has warned Ghafoor Lewal, the Afghan ambassador in Tehran, about the recent protest near the Iranian embassy in Kabul over the deaths of Afghan migrants in Iran.

“Recently a group of people held an illegal gathering in front of the Islamic Republic of Iran's embassy and some diplomatic posts (in Afghanistan) and turned the atmosphere in favor of aliens and the destruction of the two countries' relations. They were only a handful of people,” said Mousavi in the press conference.

Following the incident of a car burning on a roadside after being shot at by Iranian police-- in which three migrants were killed-- supporters of Hizb-e-Musharekat-e-Milli party in Afghanistan held a demonstration in Kabul over the incident in Yazd province.

The protesters called on international organizations to probe the killing of Afghans in Iran and to ensure that justice be brought to the perpetrators.

Mousavi condemned the protests.

“We gave a warning to the Afghan ambassador in Tehran that such actions, insults and offences are intolerable,” Mousavi added.

Mousavi also said that Iran is cooperating with Afghanistan to answer questions and answer questions regarding the deaths of Afghan migrants trying to enter Iran in May.

“Propaganda of some people and foreign media that are taking advantage of this situation with different goals is not acceptable to Iran,” said Mousavi.

The remarks come after President Ghani in a meeting on Monday said the acting minister of foreign affairs, Mohammad Haneef Atmar, will travel to Iran next week to discuss key issues regarding Afghan migrants in Iran.
