Hundreds of Jamiat-e-Islami Party supporters on Friday attended a conference in Kabul and sharply criticized the National Unity Government (NUG) leaders for not implementing the political agreement based on which the NUG was established.
The participants were mostly from Panjshir province and said they support the recent decision by Atta Mohammad Noor, executive director of the party, and President Ashraf Ghani that the party would be consulted in future regarding important decisions.
“The president should consult with the people and give them their rights, especially the rights of Jamiat-e-Islami Party,” said Safi Ahmad Haqqani, a religious scholar.
The people attending the conference also criticized Jamiat-e-Islami party leaders for not making sure the party played a bigger role in the NUG and said they are not being consulted in the internal affairs of the party.
“Some misunderstanding happened in the leadership team of the party which slowed down the negotiation process. But negotiations will continue until our demands are responded to positively,” said Farhad Azimi, an MP.
“I got membership of the party when I was 17 years old. But never been aware of the party decision,” said Mohammad Alam Ezadyar, a member of Meshrano Jirga (Upper House of Parliament.)
Noor meanwhile sent a message to delegates at the conference and said his negotiations with Ghani over a more substantial role for the party in government were not finished and that they would continue discussions in this regard.
The gathering came a day after a number of influential Jamiat party figures gathered at the house of Ahmad Zia Massoud, a member of the party, and discussed ways to solve the party’s internal disagreements.
