Mentioning Of Ethnicity In Electronic IDs Rejected By Lower House

The Lower House of the Afghan Parliament on Wednesday rejected an article in the Law on Registration of Census Population. The article stated that the ethnicity of the citizen needs to be specifically mentioned in the electronic ID.

A number of MPs wanted that ethnicity must be mentioned in the electronic IDs. But the Lower House rejected the demand through voting.

The Parliament on Wednesday drafted an article for the Law on Registration of Census Population which received lot of criticism from the MPs.

A number of MPs called the mentioning of ethnicity in each electronic ID as the right of every Afghan citizen and emphasized that it is a necessity.

MP Abdul Satar Darzabi said, "Ethnicity should be clearly mentioned on the electronic IDs. Why are the MPs scared of it? Not mentioning the ethnicity is a national treason."

MP Naqeebullah Fayeq said, "The article relating to the mentioning of ethnicity must be accepted. It is a right of every Afghan citizen."

Meanwhile, a number of MPs emphasized that ethnicity has been recorded in the information database of electronic ID and it is not necessary to mention it separately in the electronic IDs.

Mirdad Khan Nejrabi, Member of Parliament said, "I think that mentioning of ethnicity in the IDs should not be done.

But after several rounds of debate the Parliament approved another article of the Law on Registration of Census Population with majority, according to which religion must be mentioned in the electronic IDs.

Abdul Raouf Ibrahimi, Speaker of the Lower House said, "The House with a majority rejects the article which states that ethnicity must be mentioned in the electronic IDs. This is your decision parliamentarians."

This session of the Lower House was supposed to vote on other issues of this Law. But due to incompleteness of the draft, the Lower House couldn't put the other articles to vote.
