MoD Was Not Aware Of Appointment Of Dostum’s Son

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) on Wednesday said it was not informed about the appointment of Yar Mohammad Dostum, son of the First Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum, as the commander of Sheberghan Garrison in Jawzjan province.

MoD spokesman Dawlat Waziri said the issue was not made by the ministry which learnt of the development through media reports.

“I don’t know who has appointed him (Yar Mohammad). I hope that it is so. He is our Afghan, our brother. God willing he will have the talent, knowledge, education to become a general, minister, prime minster, president; and we will vote for him,” he said.

Yar Mohammad Dostum is an Army officer and according to Jawzjan officials, he was appointed to the post after a decision by the provincial security committee last week.

Yar Mohammad’s pictures have been posted on social media. Some people have congratulated him over his appointment while others link the issue to tension inside government.

The Defense Ministry also said the issue is related to the Ministry of Interior. However, the Interior Ministry says it does not deal with garrisons.

Local officials however have a different statement in this respect.

“The garrison was formed from the merging of the public order and the special guards unit of the first vice president and Yar Mohammad Khan was appointed to lead it,” said Rahmatullah Turkestan, the police chief of Jawzjan.

Yar Mohammad has studied in military and before this he was praised by President Ashraf Ghani.

The Sheberghan Garrison was established six months ago to tackle crime.
