MPs Hold Emergency Meeting Over Mosque Attack

Lawmakers in Afghanistan’s parliament held an emergency meeting on Saturday following a deadly attack on a mosque in the eastern province of Nangarhar where worshipers were targeted.

Lawmakers described the attack as “inhuman” and called on the relevant institutions to bring the perpetrators to justice.

This comes a day after at least 62 people were killed and scores wounded (unconfirmed reports now say 72 killed) from two blasts inside a mosque in Nangarhar province during Friday prayers.

“It’s really a major crime against humanity,” said MP Zahir Tamim.

“Anyone who has done this act is acting against Islam,” said MP Saima Khogyani.

“The heads of security and intelligence agencies should be summoned and asked about who is behind the incident,” said MP Raihana Azad.

“Our National Directorate of Security and our intelligence agencies are very weak,” said MP Farida Hamidi.

Lawmakers accused the Afghan security and intelligence agencies of incompetence and said that security officials should be held responsible for their failures.

Parliament members said the government must do more than just verbally condemn the attack.

Some suggested the death penalty for those involved in the atrocity.
