Former NDS chief Rahmatullah Nabil at a press conference on Monday said he is concerned about the current political situation in the country, as it would divide the country into three parts if the situation continues.

Nabil, who ran for president in last year’s elections, said the political crisis that emerged after the announcement of the election results will open the way for other terrorist groups to operate in Afghanistan.

“I am concerned that Daesh will become active,” he said.

He criticized the efforts to release the Taliban prisoners as part of a peace deal between the group and the United States. 

“I was the head of the National Directorate of Security and I know the Taliban. The 5,800 Taliban prisoners were arrested based on the constitution, human rights laws…and 280 of them were suicide bombers who were arrested with their suicide vests and other equipment.”

Nabil said that peace will not come to the country unless there is a political consensus on issues around this process.

A former Taliban member, Mawlana Jalaluddin Shinwari, said the political rifts have delayed the intra-Afghan negotiations.

“They have rifts, serious rifts. They have delayed the intra-Afghan negotiations,” he said.

But the Presidential Palace called the political tensions a marginal issue.

“Right now, political tensions should be a marginal issue. The main issue for our country is to make the peace process a success and manage the risks of the peace process,” presidential spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said.
