New Governor Arrives In Balkh To Attend Funeral

The newly appointed governor for northern Balkh province Engineer Mohammad Dawood on Tuesday evening arrived in Mazar-e-Sharif to attend his father’s funeral ceremony.

Dawood arrived at the Maulana Jalaludding Balkhi airport but did not speak to journalists. However he is reportedly in the province for his father’s funeral.

Dawood’s father died two days ago due to an illness.

Meanwhile, some reports say that Dawood’s trip to Balkh was approved by ousted governor Atta Mohammad Noor.

The new governor’s trip comes amid ongoing tension and rifts between Noor and the Presidential Palace after President Ashraf Ghani fired him last month.

Noor has however refused to step down until government reaches an agreement with Jamiat-e-Islami party.

Noor was ousted after Ghani accepted a months old resignation letter from him which he claims is no longer valid.

After the approval of his resignation, Ghani appointed Dawood as Balkh governor, but Noor said no one would take over from him until government accepted Jamiat-e-Islami’s demands.

In order to overcome the tensions between Ghani and Noor, government and Jamiat-e-Islami party held seven rounds of meetings to find a solution, but an agreement has not yet been reached.
