The commander of the Afghan National Police’s operational unit in the western province of Herat, Ahmad Shah, was killed in “accidental fire” by army forces on Friday evening, a police spokesman in Herat, Abdul Rauf Ahmadi, confirmed.

The incident happened in the western city of Herat on Saturday evening when the police commander, driving a private vehicle, did not stop for army forces, who establish checkpoints in unexpected areas in big cities--including Kabul--in some certain conditions, the spokesman said.

The army troops mistakenly opened fire on the vehicle driven by the police commander after he didn’t stop, Ahmadi said.

The Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Interior have not commented on this incident, so far. Neither they have mentioned an investigation.

Ahmad Shah’s unit was responsible for conducting special operations in the western zone.
