Population Growth In Afghanistan Concerns Officials

On the World Population Day, the Central Statistics Organization (SCO) on Monday said the country's population was increasing at a high rate and will reach more than 43 million in the next 20 years.

One of the main reasons behind the surge in population growth in Afghanistan was that families were having more children.

"Unfortunately, population growth is swift in Afghanistan. The country's economic growth has dropped in recent years and this is concerning if we relate it to the population growth," said Hasib Moahid, deputy chief of the CSO.

The United Nations celebrated the World Population Day with the theme of investing in teenage girls, aimed at fighting against under-age or early marriages in the world.

The Public Health Ministry said one of the main reasons behind increase in population is low awareness of family planning within families.

"Women's lives will be in danger if they try to have more children," said Zulaikha Anwari, acting chief of maternal department at the ministry.

In this report, TOLOnews reporter Nabila Ashrafi features a father that has 30 sons and daughters.

"14 of my daughters and 12 of my sons have got married and I have more than 200 grandsons and great grandsons," said Abdul Same Assadi, a resident of Kabul.

"If there is unity among families, increase in family members will give a good meaning to life," said Abdul Hadi Assadi, another resident of Kabul.
