Prisoners Sew their Mouths Shut to Bring Attention to Cases

Some inmates at a detention center in Kabul and a jail in Logar have staged protests over what they describe as a lack of attention by the legal and judicial institutions to their cases.

Footage seen by TOLOnews shows some of the inmates sewing their mouths shut.

Meanwhile, officials from the directorate of prisons and detention centers, said that works have started on assessing and investigating the cases of the prisoners.

“There are people here who spent one year or two years, but nothing has been done on this case,” said one inmate.

Another inmate in the Kabul detention center said: “If the president, the minister of interior, the attorney or the judge hears this, come and see our situation, the inmates are dying.”

A similar situation was reported in Logar.

“Our demand is legal, we want our rights,” said another inmate in a Logar jail.

“They have paved the way of corruption for the judge and the attorneys. One person becomes part of the order (Ghani’s order), the other one is excluded. If someone pays money, he becomes part of the order, if he does not pay money, then he is excluded. We want the president to pardon all inmates,” said a Logar inmate.

Local officials in Logar have confirmed the reports that inmates are protesting.

“Those who were handed 20-year jail terms, they wanted to be part of the release of Taliban inmates and Hizb-e-Islami prisoners,” said Mohammad Ajmal Shapor, the governor of Logar.

“The inmates have ended their protests in Kabul and Logar over the past 24 hours, the attorneys are working on their cases,” said Farhad Bayani, a spokesman for the Directorate of Prisons and Detention Centers.

This comes after the Afghan government released hundreds of Taliban and Hizb-e-Islami prisoners over the past few weeks from several jails across the country. The move has sparked retaliation among other prisoners and they criticize the government for not ruling on their cases.
