Probe Into Iranian Police Accused Of Mistreating Afghans

Reaction from Afghan citizens has poured in after a video showing the mistreatment of Afghan refugees by the Iranian border police went viral on social media.

A number of Afghan refugees who recently repatriated from Iran have criticized the Iranian border police of mistreating them. But the Iran border police have rejected the allegations and said they never mistreated Afghan refugees.

Meanwhile, the Iranian embassy in Kabul in a statement has said the beating and mistreatment of a number of Afghan citizens is unacceptable.

“The mistreatment and beating of a number of Afghan citizens is unacceptable. Law enforcement in the Islamic Republic of Iran swiftly launched an investigation into the incident and strongly rejected involvement of their personnel in such an act,” reads the statement.

The Iranian embassy said that the Islamic Republic strongly values bilateral relations between the people from the two nations.

“We also heard this through social media, unfortunately none of our countrymen were prepared to file a complaint in this regard so that we could investigate it,” said Ahmad Jawed Nadem, head of Herat refugee repatriation department.

“We shared the claims regarding the mistreatment of internally displaced persons, especially those belonging to Herat province through responsible institutions, including ministry of foreign affairs and ministry of refugees and repatriations, so the issue be tackled by the joint commission,” said Jailani Farhad, spokesman to the Herat governor.

“I was mistreated there (Iran),” said a resident from Bamiyan province. Ali.

According to the Herat refugee department, during this year, more than 300,000 Afghan refugees were repatriated to their country from Iran, of which, half were returned forcefully by the Iranian government.
