The Ministry of Information and Culture said that efforts are underway to register some of Herat's historical sites as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites. 

In a press conference in Herat, Atiqullah Azizi, the head of the Culture and Arts of the ministry, said that the government will restore many of these historic sites in order to provide conditions for the registration of the country's historical areas with the UNESCO organization. 

“Babar Garden is also on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site list, the places from Herat -- discussion is ongoing on them,” said Atiqullah Azizi. 

Herat has more than 780 historical buildings. 

According to local officials, most of these historical remains were destroyed or are in a state of collapse, and the government needs to make efforts to restore them. Some said that effective efforts have not yet been made to register the historical remains of the country as World Cultural Heritage Sites. 

“We have a lot of historical buildings that, unfortunately, neither in the past nor in the present have had resources for serious repair. We have asked the center many times to make considerations based on prioritization,” said Nayem-ul-Haq Haqqani, head of the Information and Culture Department.

"There is UNESCO's lack of cooperation and, secondly, there is a lack of an allocation of funds for us to purchase historical and ancient areas or to help those who pay attention to the restoration and reconstruction of their historical buildings,” said Wali Shah Bahrah, a cultural analyst.

Cultural analysts believe that in order to attract more tourists and preserve the valuable heritage of the country, it is necessary for the government to make efforts in the field of restoration and in the protection of these historical sites.
