Construction Begins on Herat-Ghor Highway with $450M Budget

The interim government has begun the construction of the Herat-Ghor highway.

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the deputy prime minister for economic affairs, at the opening ceremony of this highway, stated that the government plans to start working on inter-provincial roads along with constructing national highways.

“With the rise to power of the Islamic Emirate, work on the country’s highways has practically begun, including the Kabul-Kandahar corridor, the Wakhan corridor, and road construction in major cities beyond Kabul,” said Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.

The Herat-Ghor highway is one of the important highways of the country that connects the western region through Bamiyan and Maidan Wardak to the capital.

Officials say that the construction of this highway is complicated and time-consuming due to its passage through mountainous and central parts of the country.

Noor Ahmad Islam Jar, the governor of Herat, said: “This road is very complex and requires a lot of work; it is an international road that demands advanced technology and significant capital.”

This highway connects Herat to Ghor province through the districts of Pashtun Zarghun, Obe, and chasht Sharif.

A number of residents from the districts along the Herat-Ghor highway route have requested the government to complete this project within the specified time.

Abdul Wahab, a resident of Herat, said: “We couldn’t even reach our own funeral if the asphalt doesn’t start from that side, a grader should be run over this road.”

Sabghatullah Mawlawi Zada, a religious scholar, said: “If the road is built, the journey will not take eleven hours, instead only two to three hours, and the lives of patients can also be saved in time.”

The Herat-Ghor highway, 480 kilometers long and twelve meters wide, is expected to be constructed over the course of five years.

The budget for this project is $450 million, which is provided by the Islamic Emirate government.
