Opium Use for Pain Relief Rises Amid Lack of Medical Care in Wakhan

Some residents of Wakhan district in Badakhshan have told TOLOnews that due to the cold weather and the lack of medical centers and medicine, some patients use opium to relieve pain.

They have called on authorities to address the challenges faced by the people in this district, as the use of opium for pain relief can lead to addiction.

According to Wakhan residents, over the past 20 years, there has been little attention to implementing development projects in this district.

Walijan, a resident of Wakhan district, told TOLOnews: "They can't even get a packet of paracetamol for body aches and headaches, so they can't find medicine. When medicine is not available, elders and parents use drugs to relieve pain, and eventually, they become addicted."

Baz Mohammad, another resident of Wakhan district, said: "Each village is two to three hours apart, so they should have health centers in between, and the government should take serious action for addicts as well."

Wakhan is a remote and border district of Badakhshan, located 200 kilometers from Faizabad city.

On the other hand, local officials in Badakhshan have assured them that efforts are underway to address the challenges faced by the residents of Wakhan district.

Aminullah Tayeb, the deputy governor of Badakhshan, said: "The provincial government has a good plan for advancing healthcare, which will be implemented and will benefit the people of Badakhshan."

Badakhshan province, in the northeast of the country, has 28 districts, and most of its border districts face numerous challenges, including a lack of medical centers, telecommunication services, and standard roads.
