Balkh Council Member Claims Army Base Bomber Was A Soldier

Mohammad Hashim Azimi, a member of the Balkh provincial council, on Sunday told TOLOnews that one of the suicide bombers involved in the attack on the Afghan National Army 209 Shaheen Military Corps Headquarters in Balkh province had been a soldier at the base.

According to Azimi, this soldier told fellow servicemen to take cover in the canteen during the attack. However, once they were inside, he detonated his explosives, said Azimi.

Government has assigned a task team to investigate the deadly attack but as yet no results have been released.

“The eyewitnesses have said that when the insurgents attacked, an officer from the military corps urged other soldiers to gather in the canteen and said it would be safe. A number of soldiers went there and then he detonated his explosives,” Azimi said.

Azimi said another attacker had a brother serving at the base and said government needs to investigate whether he had anything to do with the attack.

Reports say that more than 10 soldiers and officers have been arrested in connection with the attack.

“People want to know what government has found out and who was behind the incident and the findings should have been shared with the people,” said Abdul Qadir Misbah, a civil society activist.

“Government should pay special attention to this issue, otherwise people will lose trust in government,” said Rajab Ali Ibrahimi, another civil society activist.

A number of residents in the northern provinces of the country said government should respond to their questions and should find out how the attack happened.

“Government should identify the culprits of the attack on the military corps and they should be punished,” said Mir Haidar, a resident of Badakhshan.

“How could the insurgents enter so easily into such a military base and create such a tragedy. Where is government’s intelligence,” said Abdul Hamid, a resident of Balkh.

“The incident should be investigated and the people involved should be punished,” said Mohammad Yunus, a resident of Takhar.

Officials have however said they are conducting an investigation and will only release their findings once the probe is complete.
