Residents Concerned Over Clashes Around Pul-e-Khumri City

A number of Pul-e-Khumri city residents on Thursday said they are gravely concerned about battles being fought only one kilometer far from the governor’s office.

The residents said a number of civilians have been killed and wounded in cross-fire between security forces and the Taliban.

The clashes are ongoing in PD2 of Pul-e-Khumri city and have forced dozens of families to flee their homes.

Baqir Ali lost a relative in cross fire. He said: “He (his relative) was killed when he was in the garden. The war near the city is dangerous for the residents.”

“The war has been ongoing for the past three days. This is a war between security forces and the Taliban. It is ongoing on the other side of Nahr Gawhargan area in the city. The war has stopped our business and activities,” said another resident of the city, Harun.

However, Baghlan Police Chief Amirgul Husainkhail said the Taliban has been pushed back and two of them were killed and three others were wounded in the ongoing battle.

“This was the area where the enemy used to threaten and murder people. The vulnerable villages were cleared of the enemy as per the order of the governor’s office,” he said.

This comes after Baghlan residents warned two weeks ago that additional areas in the province would fall to the Taliban if government did not send out reinforcements.
