Report Spotlights "Improper Treatment" of Disabled People

A report by the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission speaks of “improper treatment” and discrimination towards people with disabilities and a lack of trust in their capabilities by other members of society, as well as within families.

The commission has interviewed 979 people with disabilities-- including 179 girls in 28 provinces.

The report suggests the implementation of laws and regulations for people with disabilities.

“People with disabilities have less access to health care due to long distance to health facilities and hospitals,” a member of the human rights commission, Benafsha Yaqubi, said.

The report shows that people with disabilities do not enjoy basic rights.

The four decades of war in Afghanistan – including the last 19-year-old conflict – has left over a million Afghans maimed.

Zakira Khatirzai, chairperson of a council dealing with women with disabilities, said seven members of their institution are women. She said the community still faces challenges in Afghan society.

“The number of people with disabilities is very high and the assistance to them is not sufficient. They have been sidelined,” she said.

A recent report by the Red Cross shows that at least 10,000 Afghans are maimed every year.
