Resolution in US Congress Seeks to Resettle Afghan Hindus, Sikhs

A resolution introduced in US Congress seeks to resettle these persecuted religious communities from Afghanistan, The Times of India reported Wednesday.

The report said that the resolution was introduced in the House of Representatives last week by Congresswoman Jackie Speier and co-sponsored by seven others.

“Sikhs and Hindus are indigenous but endangered minorities in Afghanistan, numbering approximately 700 out of a community that recently included over 8,000 members,” the resolution stated.

It supports resettling Sikhs and Hindus from Afghanistan in US under the US Refugee Admissions Program pursuant to the Immigration and Nationality Act.

On March 25, at least 25 Sikhs and Hindus were killed in an attack on a gurdwara in Kabul which claimed by Daesh.

“These acts follow a greater pattern of targeted violence against Sikhs, Hindus, and other minorities in Afghanistan in recent years,” the resolution said according to the report.

Last week, India media reported that a group of around 180 Afghanistan Hindu and Sikhs is likely to leave Afghanistan for India.

Their number in Afghanistan had come down to around 700, according to reports.

The first batch of 11 Afghan Sikhs and Hindus arrived in India on July 26.
