At least seven people were killed in a road accident on Wednesday on the Kandahar-Herat Highway in the country’s south-west, local officials confirmed.
The accident happened in Maiwand district when a passenger bus and car collided, the provincial governor’s spokesman Qudratullah Khoshbakht said.
He said at least 22 people were also injured in the accident.
The Kandahar-Kabul-Herat Highway was built during former president Hamid Karzai’s government and at the time was seen as a major achievement.
However, residents complain the highway is now in extremely bad condition due to heavy road usage, a lack of maintenance and continued attacks by insurgents. Bridges along the highway have also been damaged over the years.
Residents that live in the vicinity of the highway commonly refer to it as the Highway of Death.
This is however the first serious incident along the highway this year but there were numerous incidents last year.
Some officials blame drivers for the high rate of accidents and say its due to reckless driving.
