Spring Polio Campaign Kicks Off in Western Zone

Health workers are preparing to vaccinate more than 1.3 million children under the age of five against polio in the western provinces of Herat, Badghis and Farah.

Local authorities in western Afghanistan have called on insurgent groups to cooperate with health workers during the three-day campaign and to not disrupt the process as it safeguards Afghan children from contracting the disease.

Over 650,000 children will be vaccinated against polio during the three day campaign in Herat, said Mohammad Asif Kabir, deputy head of Herat health department.

“In Ghor province and in Farsi district, over 130,000 children under the age of five will not be vaccinated in the campaign, but we are determined to conduct vaccinations for them once the weather gets warmer,” he said.

Herat governor Mohammad Asif Rahimi has also appealed to insurgents to cooperate with health workers during the campaign.

“We appeal to the armed opponents and their families to cooperate with the volunteers so that their children can remain healthy,” said Rahimi.

Poliovirus is causative agent of poliomyelitis (commonly known as polio), and is a human enterovirus and member of the family of Picornaviridae.
