A Taliban commander Mullah Mustafa was killed in a clash with security forces on Wednesday afternoon, local officials confirmed on Thursday.
The clashes started in Gozara district of the province after police launched an operation. Mustafa and one of his bodyguards were killed, a spokesman for theprovincial police chief Abdul Ahad Walizada said.
“The commander was involved in a number of insurgency attacks in Herat city and southern districts of Herat,” Walizada said, adding that “the police also discovered some weapons.”
However, he did not provide further details about the operation.
The Taliban has not yet commented.
