Taliban Delegation Visits Iran

A senior delegation of the Taliban was invited by Iran to negotiate with the Iranian officials, Iranian media reported.

The delegation was led by Sayed Taib Agha and Mohammad Ullah Nomanee, the Taliban representatives in Qatar and Shamsuddin Pahlawan respectively. The former Taliban Governor of the Maidan Wardak province was also among the delegation.

A Taliban official on condition of anonymity told Pakistani media that the delegation has gone to discuss about Iran's cooperation with the Taliban post 2014, when the foreign forces withdraw from Afghanistan.

"Taliban will clearly state their policy to the Iranian officials and will try to reduce the tension that Iran ever had with this Group," the Taliban official said.

The Afghan Foreign Affairs Ministry said that discussions have begun over the credibility of Taliban's trip to Iran. At the same time, a Taliban official confirmed the trip.

The Ministry stressed that Iran strongly supports Afghanistan's peace process.

"The position of Iran in connection with Afghanistan's peace process is clear and Iran will support the Afghan Government in its peace process," the Foreign Affairs Ministry Spokesman Janan Mosazai said.

The trip has been undertaken at a time when the US had emphasized on peace negotiations with the Taliban.

"I don't think that the trip happened. If it has happened, it will cause great damage to Afghanistan and its people," the former leader of Taliban Jaish al-Muslimin Group, Sayed Akbar Agha said.

It seems that Taliban and Iran have some joint motive, both are against the US presence in Afghanistan, both want the withdrawal of the US military from Afghanistan.

"To defeat the US and neutralization of the Afghan peace process is at the backdrop of this trip," political expert Ajmal Balochzada said.

Meanwhile, Iranian Embassy officials told Afghanistan that they are not aware of Taliban's trip to Iran.
