TAP To Be Implemented Alongside TAPI

Following the ground-breaking ceremony of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India (TAPI) gas pipeline project in Herat on Friday, officials from energy and water ministry said they have signed the Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan (TAP) power project agreement.

According to the officials, the TAP project will transmit 500 kilovolts of power from Turkmenistan to Pakistan through Afghanistan and will run alongside the TAPI pipeline.

The energy ministry advisor Yahya Hazem said Afghanistan will earn an additional $50 million USD in transit fees from TAP once it has been implemented.

The power transmission line will cover 700 kilometers in Afghanistan to Pakistan. The agreement meanwhile was signed at the inauguration ceremony of TAPI on Friday.

“The practical work on this project will start soon and after its completion, all the details about it will become clear,” said Hazem.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) said the TAP project will not only carry economic benefits, but it will also address electricity shortages in the west of the country.

“The TAP project will play a significant role in investment increase and will resolve the electricity shortages in the west of the country,” ACCI Chief Executive Officer Atiqullah Nusrat said.

The Asian Development Bank has promised to provide $150 million USD to support the implementation of TAP in Afghanistan.

According to ADB officials in Afghanistan, in addition to providing financial support, the bank will also provide technical support for TAP to the three countriesinvolved.
