Thousands In Kabul Mourn The Death Of Anwari

Prominent Afghan politician and former Jihad commander and military advisor to President Ashraf Ghani, Sayed Hussain Anwari, was laid to rest in Kabul on Saturday.

Thousands of mourners attended the ceremony including high-ranking government officials and his supporters. Anwari's coffin was transferred from Sardar Mohammad Dawoud Khan hospital to Khatamunnaibian mosque and buried in Eskart hill in Kabul.

"Anwari was one of the frontrunner figures of Afghanistan's Jihad. He continued to be present in the Jihad all the time and contributed effectively," said Minister of Refugees and Repatriations Sayed Hussain Alimi Balkhi.

"Anwari was one of the prominent personalities of the Afghan nation, he contributed greatly during the Jihad and resistance period and during the new chapter of the Afghan government," former Jihadi commander Abdul Basir Salangi said. Participants at the ceremony said that Anwari's political gains during Jihad have been quite important.

"He tolerated massive changes during 35 years of Jihad and the resistance for the reconstruction of Afghanistan and good governance," senate deputy chairman Mohammad Alam Ezidyar said.

Anwari's Life and Career:

Sayed Hussain Anwari was born in 1957 in the northern province of Parwan. He completed his education in a school in his home town in 1978.

Anwari joined the Mujahedeen movement in 1979 and officially started his political career with Hizb-e-Harakat-e-Islami party. "Among the political figures, it was only Sayed Hussain Anwari who eliminated the political and religious borders between the people of Afghanistan, he never exploited politics for his personal objectives," said Ahmad Zia Massoud, presidential advisor for reform and good governance.

Anwari spent many years working alongside Ahmad Shah Massoud in their struggle against the Soviet occupation forces.

"He was a hardworking commander, a great man, humble and had a good-tempered personality, he was also selecting the path of unity whenever there was tension between the Mujahedeen," Anwari's colleague Saleh Mohammad Registani said.

"He was a friend to everyone and was loved by everyone," another colleague Sayed Eshaq Gillani said. "As a politician, he had the courage of taking a stance, besides that, he was a people-oriented man," former head of the Central Bank of Afghanistan, Anwarul Haq Ahadi said.

In 1979, Anwari started his political efforts with Hizb-e-Harakat-e-Islami Afghanistan under the leadership of Ayatollah Sheikh Mohammad Asif Mohseni and led the party until the final days of his life. "His efforts had significance on national politics, the party and even for the international community," a party member Mohammad Aman Rahmani said. Anwari served as governor of Kabul and Herat provinces.

He was also elected as MP, but resigned from parliament in 2014. After the formation of the National Unity Government, Anwari was appointed as Ghani's military advisor. Anwari who had travelled to India for medical treatment, died in an Indian hospital on Tuesday.

Anwari was one of the prominent faces of Afghan politics and also served as a key figure of Afghan Mujahedeen who fought against the Soviet forces in Afghanistan. "He contributed effectively in the nation-building process among all Afghan ethnic groups," said Mohammad Aman Rahmani member of Hizb-e-Harakat Islami party.

After the takeover of the government by the Mujahedeen, Anwari was appointed as a member of the defense commission and security of Kabul.

He was also minister of social affairs and labor. After the emergence of the Taliban regime, Anwari joined the northern alliance.

"Since his youth and when the Afghan people started their armed struggle against the invaders, he was active in the Jihad," said Mohammad Askar Falah, a member of the Hizb-e-Islami party. Meanwhile, a number of Anwari's relatives and colleagues have said that he was one of the key Mujahedeen commanders and a prominent politician. Anwari's body was transferred to Kabul on Friday. He will be buried in Kabul on Saturday.
