Trump Urges Pakistan To Take Decisive Action Against Terrorists

US President Donald Trump unveiled a new national security strategy on Monday, calling on Pakistan to take decisive action against terrorist groups operating on their territory.

"And we have made clear to Pakistan that while we desire continued partnership we must see decisive action against terrorist groups operating on their territory and we make massive payments every year to Pakistan,” Trump said.

The strategy has 1harsh words for Pakistan, "since no partnership can survive a country's support for militants and terrorists that targets a partner's own service members and officials," a reference to Pakistan's support for elements of the Taliban that attack American targets in Afghanistan.

The strategy urges NATO's European allies to increase defense spending to two percent of gross domestic product by 2024.

Part of Trump's strategy for Afghanistan includes an increase in airstrikes against militants. Civilian deaths due to strikes rose by 52 percent in the first nine months of 2017, according to SIGAR, though the US military has disputed those numbers.

Trump said the security strategy would also end mandatory defense spending limits.

"We recognize that weakness is the surest path to conflict and unrivaled power is the most certain means of defense. For this reason, our security strategy breaks from damaging defense sequester," Trump said. "We're going to get rid of that."
