Two Million Afghans Face Food Shortage

The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan, Toby Lanzer, in an interview with TOLOnews said that at least two million people in Afghanistan are facing food shortage and that they need humanitarian assistance.

Lanzer said they need more than $400 million USD to provide food for these people. Part of the money has been provided by the international community and the remaining should also be provided in a bid to provide the required help to the people in need.

“Up to two million people here need help in accessing food. We know, depending on the season, there will be more need,” said Lanzer.

The UN officials said at least 40 percent of Afghan citizens are living below the poverty line.

“I think that for the people of Afghanistan the situation continues to be quite difficult. There is no secret that things can be different whether you live in an urban area such as Kabul or a rural area in one of the provinces. So many people in Afghanistan are below the poverty line, so many people suffering from the effects of violence” said Lanzer.

Some members of parliament meanwhile said government and donor organizations have not done any fundamental work to bring changes and promote lives of the Afghan people during the past 16 years.

“If government's efforts in this respect are evaluated, the result will be weak,” MP Mohammad Ali Akhlaqi said.

United Nations says that over 30 employees of the humanitarian organization have lost their lives in Afghanistan, but the institutions are committed to helping the Afghan people.
