Two-Part Plan Launched to Fight Pollution

The National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) said on Sunday that they have prepared a plan with both long-term and short-term measures for the reduction of the effects of pollution and will submit them to the president’s office soon. The agency said “the reduction of pollution takes time.”

The efforts come as president Ghani ordered a 10-day deadline for 22 relevant organizations, including NEPA, to take serious actions regarding the reduction of pollution.

Laila Samani, the head of information and public relations of NEPA, said: “Implementation of the plan will take time if we want to asphalt roads and if we want to make green places, and also if we want to work on alternative energy.”

Based on the plan, NEPA will distribute nearly one million masks to the resident of Kabul.

Also, the plan calls for purifying coal, reducing the availability of goods that produce smoke, asphalting roads, and making “green spaces.”

NEPA determined that gas emissions and burning materials are the biggest cause of pollution.

But Lailuma Hakimi, member of Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament), stated the obvious problem: “People will not be able to keep patients, kids and old women in cold places.”

Saifullah Daneshjoo said, “the pollution is so high people can`t even see in it.”

Mohammad Doud Kakar, another citizen of Kabul city said, “Pollution fills the whole city. There is smoke from coal and plastic--poor people use plastic and coal.”

The NEPA added that they have identified nearly 350 causes of pollution in Kabul.
