UK Envoy Says Taliban Needs To Join Peace Process

Dominic Jermey, ambassador of the United Kingdom (UK) to Afghanistan said in an interview with TOLOnews that peace will not come to Afghanistan through battles and urged the Taliban to join the peace talks process with the Afghan government.

Jermey said the UK supports Afghan-owned peace talks and that negotiations is the best way to reach sustainable peace.

“I very much hope that it will send a firm message to the Taliban of the seriousness, of the importance that the Afghan government with the support of the international community put on the reconciliation. But the basic problem at the moment is that the Taliban are fighting on the battlefield and killing innocent Afghans and killing tens or hundreds of members of the Afghan national security and defense force and that is what has to change in order for there to be reconciliation,” he said.

Jermey also touched on Afghanistan-Pakistan relationships and urged both countries to put an end to their tensions.

“This is the relationship that is got to be led by both countries. We can’t do that for them, what we can do is to facilitate conversations between each other and we can help understand
and improve both countries. And our interests in Afghanistan are enormous for us, and in order for everything we are trying to do in Afghanistan to improve the level of development, to support the development of private sector in this country, to help the Afghan government in fighting against terrorism in Afghanistan and to develop stability of south Asia,” Jermey said.

UK ambassador also stressed the need to fight corruption and said the tax payers’ money and the international community’s aid should not go to the pockets of corrupt people.

Meanwhile a Hizb-e-Islami spokesman, Hashmatullah Arshad said no one can take power through fighting.

"If anyone wants to come to power through fighting, I say they can't and it is wrong," he said.
