UN, Afghan Govt Plan New Aid Spending Strategy

The United Nations and the Afghan government have decided to work together to ensure better utilization and spending of development aid for Afghanistan in order for the public to benefit more from projects funded by the international community.

A meeting titled “ONE UN” was held at the Presidential Palace on Sunday between delegates from the Afghan government, the UN and civil society institutions in order to discuss ways to better ensure the use of aid.

Addressing the conference, Toby Lanzer, Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said that the organization was looking to further enhance its efforts in Afghanistan to make sure that Afghans have a bright future.

"The areas of education, of food security and livelihoods, of health. Of returning and reintegration, and since January last year we have had over a million and a half people come back.  And to focuse on that question of rule of law and enermous aspects of the UN's work where we help you understand standards ...we work with you to put policies in place," said Tobi Lenzer.

"Any plan that the UN wants to implement after this in Afghanistan, should be based on the people’s needs," said Farkhunda Zahra Naderi, Senior Advisor to the President on UN Affairs.

The joint commitment comes as Afghanistan faces an influx of return refugees from Iran and Pakistan.

Analysts said the expansion of humanitarian programs in the country will help the resettlement of these refugees in the country.
