A US service member was "killed in action” on Monday in Afghanistan, US forces in Afghanistan said in a statement.

In accordance with US Department of Defense policy, the names of the service members killed in action are withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin is complete, the statement said.

Three weeks ago two US soldiers were killed in a helicopter crash in Logar province.

The incident happened in Chark district.

Monday’s fatality brings the death toll to 20 US soldiers killed in Afghanistan this year.

The US currently has about 12,000 troops in Afghanistan engaged in training, advising and assisting Afghan security forces and performing counter-terrorism operations.
