Violence by Taliban Spikes Despite Peace Efforts

The Taliban has conducted 95 attacks on Afghan forces outposts in 10 provinces over the past 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Defense (MoD), despite an expected reduction in violence from the group as part of a deal they signed with the United States on Feb. 29.

The incidents, according to the ministry, include offensives, rockets, shelling and roadside bomb blasts in Kapisa, Laghman, Kunar, Balkh, Helmand, Faryab, Badakhshan, Kunduz, Wardak and Logar.

Last week, acting Defense Minister Assadullah Khalid warned that the Afghan Defense and Security Forces will be no longer be in a defensive mode after Saturday, March 14, referring to the ANDSF response to the increase in Taliban attacks.

“...The Afghan people are determined to defend the country alongside the Afghan National Army,” said Abdul Sattar Hussaini, an MP.
