The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Thursday announced that out 26,000 polling stations, the votes of 8,494 stations will be re-counted.

According to the IEC officials, the vote recounting process was supposed to start on Tuesday and was expected to end Wednesday.

The Independent Election Commission officials say that their delegations started their travel today to provinces to begin the recounting process.

“We officially started the recounting process, our categorization is going on, our employees have been introduced, letters are signed and financial issues are cleared,” head of the Election Commission’s secretariat, Habib-Ur-Rahman Nang said.

The recount begins as Abdullah Abdullah's electoral team protests the process, saying that about 300,000 votes are invalid.

His team has warned that any recount will not be acceptable without a decision made on the validity of 300,000 questionable votes.

“Until the real level of votes has not been cleared, the votes recounting process will not have any result—because in that situation the recounting process will have to be repeated for a second time, third time and even many more times,” said Muhammad Yunus Nawandish, an observer of Abdullah's team.

However, the Independent Election Commission says that out of the disputed votes, the 137,000 votes that were quarantined in the commission's database were included in the election votes after approval by the Dermalog company.

“The primary result is a raw result and raw information. They (Abdullah’s team) can share all their issues in every aspect with the Election Complaints Commission (ECC) after the preliminary results are announced,” head of the Election Commission’s secretariat, Habib-Ur-Rahman Nang said.

On the other hand, observer bodies and a number of presidential candidates say an inability to manage, and the special interests of the IEC members and the secretariat of the IEC, are the reasons for the delay in announcing the results.

“They (IEC) have no capacities, they are not independent, they have no national will, and that proves that they are leading the country to a crisis," said Rahmatullah Nabil, a presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, Abdullah Abdullah's election team says the IEC did not cooperate with the Attorney General's Office (AGO) to investigate how the IEC's digital center lock was broken.

“The AGO must seriously investigate the issue to reach to those who committed the action. The reason those people have not been introduced to the AGO is because those who directed the people to break the locks are in authority and they don’t want to cooperate with the AGO because then they themselves will be involved in the issue,” said Noor Rahman Akhlaqi, a member of Abdullah’s team.

The IECC Secretariat and spokesman Mohammad Qasim Elyasi also said that the IECC is not yet aware of the investigation of the digital center lock issue.

The concerns are raised as the preliminary results are expected to be announced by the IEC in the next six days.
