Women Want Significant Role In Decision-Making

Women from the civil society and government organizations discussed the challenges they face in the Afghan society at the “Women and Democracy” ceremony on Friday.

They said the past 15 years have given them many achievements, but they want further role in decision-making process in the Afghan government.

The women are still victims of violence and gender discrimination in many parts of Afghanistan.

“We should not be happy with the low percentage of women’s involvement in political arena. People should know that today’s women will be the founders of new politics in the future,” said Hamida Osmani, member of Mehwar-e-Mardum-e-Afghanistan.

"There are still many challenges on the way of women," Rana Tarin, senator said.

Organizers of the meeting said women’s political and social status is fragile and that they are living in a patriarchal society.

“The Independent Election Commission’s independency and capacity is questioned,” Asadullah Daudzai, another member of the movement said.

This comes after a report by the Peace Research Institute in Norway in which it has listed Afghanistan and Syria as the worst countries for women. Iceland and Norway are the best countries for women according to the report.
