The Minister of Information and Culture announced that the reconstruction of Bala Hissar has been 80% completed and that the work on this ancient site will be finished by the end of the year.
Bala Hissar, in Kuh-e-Sher Darwaza, consists of 22 towers, made during the empire of Hephthalites, according to local experts.
Khabib Ghuffran, the spokesperson for the ministry, said that “where those places need rebuilding it is underway, including various elements, parts of doors and cobblestones.”
Ketab Khan Faizi, head of the Kushani International Research Center, said: “Kabul’s Bala Hissar has been located in the heart of Kabul since the empire of Hephthalites. This ancient place has 22 structures of which some parts have been damaged in the last wars. Around this castle, there were some ditches and now there is no sign of that. Historically it is unique in the region.”
Some archaeologists and cultural experts in the country consider the restoration and protection of the country's ancient sites important.
“Bala Hissar and other historical castles that were used for military purpose, the government should care about them," said Sher Mohammad Noori, a cultural analyst.
Abdul Raman, another cultural activist, said: “Historical places are the life history of our country, the government should pay attention to them.”
The reconstruction of Bala Hissar was started by the Ministry of Information and Culture with the cooperation of the Aga Khan Cultural foundation in 2018, but was halted due the lack of budget and incomplete excavations.
