Herat’s Historic Bazaars Bear the Scars of War and Earthquakes

The covered bazaars of Herat’s old city have stood strong for centuries, despite the passage of time. According to cultural experts, these markets were once among the region’s most important trade centers.

These covered bazaars are also recognized as junctions of cultural and civilizational exchange in the region.

However, the roofs of some of these old markets have collapsed due to natural disasters and past wars.

Ali Qasemi, a shopkeeper in one of the covered bazaars in Herat’s old city, told TOLOnews: “This bazaar is extremely valuable. Tourists come here to visit. It’s a historical and scenic place, and many people—especially foreigners—come to see it.”

Mohammad Naser, who runs a silk-weaving workshop in a covered bazaar in the old city, said: “Foreigners come here to take photographs and film because this place is ancient—it was built around 400 to 500 years ago.”

Mohammad Anwar, who has been a shopkeeper in this covered market for nearly 60 years, said he has stood by this historic market through good days and bad.

Speaking about the bazaar, he said: “This is a very old market. People from both inside and outside the country come to visit. Everyone admires this historic place and hopes it won't be damaged. If someone comes here and tries to remove even one brick or paint anything nearby, we raise our voices and don’t allow any harm to be done.”

Historical events and natural disasters have left visible scars on the grandeur of many of these covered markets.

Ahmadullah Muttaqi, Director of Information and Culture in Herat, told TOLOnews: “Many of the covered markets were damaged in last year’s earthquake, but they have been repaired. We are paying close attention, and they are under constant care. Whatever is needed in this regard, we will carry out with the cooperation and determination of the people and through the Historical Monuments Department.”

The covered bazaars of Herat’s old city were built during the 13th and 14th centuries. These markets were constructed at the four main gates of the old city: Iraq Gate, Malik Gate, Kandahar Gate, and Khush Gate. Most sections of these bazaars have been destroyed over time due to natural disasters or war.
