Qatari Foundation to Build Township in Kabul

Officials at a ceremony on Saturday inaugurated the construction of a township by a Qatari organization, the Al-Gharafa Foundation, in Kabul.

The $110-million township will be built on 6 hectares of land in the Khoshal Khan area in Kabul.

The township will have 12-story buildings, two trade centers, two schools, a mosque, and an orphanage.

“We are in different sectors working in Afghanistan, especially in Kabul and Farah along with this big project which you were seeing over here,” said Shahid Jawadullah Rakha, the CEO of Al-Gharrafa Foundation.

He said another project by the foundation is in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is on the verge of completion. He said the project consists of an institute for the diplomats, a conference hall, offices, more than 100 parking under the ground and a mosque.

The Urban Development and Housing Minister Mahmoud Karzai said the apartments of the township would be distributed to needy families.

“I want to say that the government is supporting such projects because more investment should be attracted in the country,” Karzai said.

The foundation has operations in Afghanistan over many years. It has also provided the ground for the export of Afghan fruit and vegetables to Qatar.
