Kabul Municipality Places Price Cap on Essential Goods

The Kabul Municipality has ordered a price cap on essential goods after residents complained over a spike in prices commodities such as cooking supplies and fuel.

The move was welcomed by the residents, who said that such decisions will help keep the prices of food materials fair.

Based on the new cap issued by the Kabul municipality, the prices are as followed:

  • One sack of flour (2,185 Afs)
  • One sack of rice (2,759 Afs)
  • 16 liters of oil (2,670 Afs)
  • One liter of petrol (92.74 Afs)
  • One kilo of gas (84 Afs)

“The price cap has been issued by the municipality to control the prices. We call on the residents to help us enforce the price cap,” said Niamatullah Barakzai, a spokesman for the Kabul municipality.

The residents of Kabul called on the municipality to take serious steps to implement the price caps.

“The government should allocate a price cap and a limit for commodities based on the price of the dollar. If the government can control this, it is a good move,” said Samim Amiri, a resident of Kabul.

“All commodities are imported from abroad. We don’t have our own products. The price of the dollar is not stable,” said Zar Alam, a shopkeeper.

After the fall of the former government, the price of commodities, particularly food materials, has significantly risen. The Afghan currency has also lost its value against the dollar.
