The Pakistani media reported that the country’s exports to Afghanistan increased to $95.5 million in August 2022, up 92% from $49.86 million in August 2021. 

The Nation cited Sajid Ali, Research Associate at the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, as saying that reducing trade barriers, visa relaxation for exporters, and enhancing economic cooperation would help achieve new trade between the two countries.  

Meanwhile, the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI) said that the increased facilitation at the crossing points between Afghanistan and Pakistan has caused the increase in imports.  

“Because of the facilities provided at the crossing points and ports between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and due to 24/7 services, the exports from Pakistan to Afghanistan and from Afghanistan to Pakistan have increased,” said Khairuddin Mayal, deputy head of ACCI.  

But Afghan traders expressed concern, saying that Pakistan has increased tariffs on Afghan commodities.  

“The fresh fruits which are being exported are being stopped by Pakistan in every fruit season. Pakistan has issued new laws and increased tariffs on Afghan fruits. The fruits are being stopped at the port and there it spoils,” said Zalmai Azimi, a trader.  

The Afghanistan Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock (ACAL) said that the flash floods which recently hit the country have affected the harvest. However ACAL said that the export of fruits and vegetables to Pakistan is continuing.  

“The products inside the country have been affected by the recent floods. There is no exact number because the exports are still on track. At the end of the year, we can tell the statistics,” said Mirwais Hajizada, deputy head of ACAL.
