US Announces New Aid Package for Afghanistan

The US Department of State has announced nearly $327 million aid for Afghanistan, bringing the total amount of aid since August 2021 to more than $1.1 billion.

Meanwhile, talking at the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations, the Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif urged the international community to release Afghan assets.

“This funding includes nearly $119 million through the Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration and nearly $208 million through the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, bringing the total U.S. humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan and neighboring countries to more than $1.1 billion since the Taliban takeover one year ago in August 2021,” the US department of State said in a statement.

According to the statement, the funding will provide emergency cash, shelter, healthcare, and reintegration assistance to internally displaced persons and returnees, as well as protection, life-saving reproductive and maternal health, and gender-based violence prevention and response services.

The new assistance was welcomed by the Islamic Emirate.

“The new aid of the US can be allocated for major economic projects in support of domestic industrial organizations and also strengthening infrastructure and economic development,” said Abdul Latif Nazari, the deputy minister of economy.

The Pakistan PM Shahbaz Sharif also voiced concerns over the deteriorated economic situation of Afghanistan.

“Pakistan urges the international community to respond in a positive way to the UN Secretary General’s appeal for $4.2 billion in humanitarian and economic assistance to Afghanistan—release Afghanistan’s financial reserves essential to revive its banking system,” he said.
