Exports Reached $2 Billion in 1401 Solar Year: MoIC

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce said that Afghan exports reached $2 billion in solar year 1401.

A spokesman for the MoIC, Akhundzada Abdul Salam Jawad, said that domestic products contributed more than 50 percent of the exports. According to Jawad, the exports went to Pakistan, India, the UAE and Uzbekistan.

“We were able to increase our exports to $2 billion in 1401 solar year. Most of the exports went to neighboring countries,” he said.

According to the MoIC, agriculture products contributed 52 percent of the exports, while minerals were 28 percent and textiles contributed 9 percent..

The MoIC’s provided the following information of exports:

  • $445 million to Pakistan  
  • $202 million to India  
  • $41 million to the UAE  
  • $31 million to Uzbekistan  
  • $23 million to China  
  • $20 million to Iran 

“Transportation is very important in trade. After vessels, the railways are the cheapest means of transportation if we are connected via railway inside Afghanistan from north to south and to east and west and also with our neighboring countries Pakistan and also with Iran,” said Khanjan Alokozai, a member of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment.

This comes as traders have repeatedly expressed their concerns about the restrictions on the banking system.

“The increase of exports can have a positive impact on the value of the national currencies...,” said Mir Shikib Mir, an economist.

The MoIC said that Afghanistan had nearly $7 billion worth of imports in 1401.
