The Ministry of Industry and Commerce has stated that trade with Russia over the past eight months has amounted to $227 million, with exports accounting for only $3 million.
Akhundzada Abdul Salam Jawad, spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, mentioned that during the same period, the country imported goods worth $224 million from Russia.
The spokesperson added: "Afghanistan's trade with Russia in the first eight months of 2024 reached $227 million, including $3 million in exports and $224 million in imports, showing an 18% increase compared to the previous year."
Meanwhile, a delegation from the Chamber of Commerce and Investment traveled to Russia and held talks with officials from the Russian Chamber of Commerce to discuss expanding trade and resolving business issues between Kabul and Moscow.
Mohammad Yunus Momand, the First Vice Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Investment, stated: "We are working on how to initiate the export of fresh and dried fruits to Russia. Russia is a good market for our fresh fruits and has significant demand."
Some economic experts suggest that expanding trade relations with Russia also impacts the country's economic growth.
Mir Shakir Yaqubi, an economic expert, told TOLOnews: "There is a clear need for Russian investment in energy and natural resources. Additionally, given the international sanctions, Afghanistan's trade with Russia holds special importance, as Russia can act as an alternative market. Moreover, Afghanistan's geographical position allows it to serve as a bridge between Central Asia and South Asia."
According to information from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, in the same eight-month period of the previous year, trade with Russia amounted to $334 million.
