Paktika’s Paltuni Dam Construction Reaches 20% Completion

Matiullah Abid, spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy and Water, told TOLOnews that the construction of the Paltuni Dam in Paktika province has progressed by 20%.

He stated that the dam will have the capacity to irrigate 2,500 hectares of land and store 107 million cubic meters of water.

Once operational, the Paltuni Dam will generate 935 kilowatts of electricity per hour.

Matiullah Abid further said: "The Paltuni hydropower project in Paktika is one of the key projects of the Ministry of Energy and Water. Its construction is about 20% complete. This dam will be able to irrigate 2,500 hectares of agricultural land, generate one megawatt of electricity, and store 107 million cubic meters of water annually."

Experts emphasize that dam construction plays a crucial role in boosting agriculture and power generation, calling for increased investments in energy production within the country.

Economic expert Basir Tareqi said: "We must utilize our own resources. Afghanistan has rivers like Kunar and Panjshir, and overall, the country has the potential to generate 30,000 to 33,000 megawatts of electricity."

Another expert, Qutbuddin Yaqubi, said: "Managing water resources, improving agriculture, generating energy, creating jobs, and enhancing the economic situation are all vital benefits of building dams."

The Paltuni Dam, located 12 kilometers from Sharan, the capital of Paktika, is being constructed with a height of 30 meters, a length of 260 meters, and a width of 112 meters. The project, aimed at seasonal water storage for irrigation and agricultural development, is valued at over 851 million afghani.
