Afghan Business Leaders See Moscow’s Move as a Turning Point

Following Russia’s recognition of the Islamic Emirate, Afghan economic experts and the private sector have described the move as a positive step toward improving the country’s economic conditions.

They believe this decision could help reduce financial and trade restrictions and open the door to greater international engagement.

Currently, Afghanistan conducts over $300 million in annual trade with Russia. With Moscow’s latest decision, hopes have risen for a significant increase in bilateral trade.

Khanjan Alokozai, a board member of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment, told TOLOnews: “Afghanistan is facing serious challenges. politically, banks are blocked, and Western sanctions are in place. Recognition of the Islamic Emirate by a regional power like Russia has serious implications. We believe this will benefit both the Islamic Emirate and the Afghan people politically and economically.”

According to economic analysts, Russia’s recognition of the caretaker government could lead to a sharp increase in trade volume. They argue that engagement with influential countries like Russia can play a key role in expanding infrastructure projects, creating jobs, and reducing poverty.

Economic analyst Abdul Zuhoor Madabar told TOLOnews: “Since resources are not concentrated in one region, countries must develop economic, political, and strategic ties. These interactions benefit all involved nations. Diplomatic relations, including recognition of the ruling government, must be clear and structured. If other countries follow Russia’s lead, it could work in our favor and theirs.”

Another analyst, Abdul Shakoor Hadawal, said: “Politics has a major impact on the economy. The stronger the Islamic Emirate’s political and diplomatic ties with other countries, the stronger their economic relations will be. This leads to economic growth and the creation of job opportunities for thousands.”

Although Russia has yet to invest in Afghanistan, its technical capacity, especially in engineering and oil extraction has raised new hopes for practical cooperation between Kabul and Moscow.
